You want to erase me

From your conscience;

Banish me

From the vestiges of your mind;

My heart would be lighter

If I could do the same

With you.

But I am still there,

And you are still here

As we know quite well.

We will remain in our minds

As references to a past

Palatable and not so;

But we can be present

In each other’s conscience

As shadows,

As liminal moments,

As fleeting thoughts

With no reference to the present

Or the future.

Rather than memory

And its selective failings

Let history overtake us some day

And make us insignificant footnotes,

Not referred to by anyone.

On that day,

I would have left your mind,

And you mine.
